  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme (or 1 teaspoon fresh thyme)
  • 1 tablespoon butter (for greasing)
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
  • Fresh thyme sprigs
  • Extra Parmesan cheese
  • Crispy fried onions (optional)

Instructions

  1. Sauté sliced onions in butter and olive oil over medium heat for about 15-20 minutes until caramelized.
  2. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking dish.
  3. Layer half the sliced potatoes, half the caramelized onions, and half the cheeses in the dish. Repeat layers.
  4. Whisk together cream, salt, pepper, and thyme; pour it evenly over the layered ingredients.
  5. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes; then remove foil, add more cheese if desired, and bake uncovered for an additional 15-20 minutes until golden.
