  • 1/3 cup buttermilk (or milk), plus extra for brushing
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 to 3 teaspoons buttermilk (or milk)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • optional: 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon, ginger, or cardamom

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, brown sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, and salt.
  3. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Stir in pumpkin purée, buttermilk, and vanilla until just combined—do not over-mix.
  5. Turn dough onto a floured surface and shape into an 8-inch circle; cut into wedges.
  6. Chill scone wedges for about 15 minutes before baking.
  7. Brush tops with buttermilk and bake for 13-15 minutes until lightly golden.
  8. Once cooled slightly, drizzle with glaze made from powdered sugar and additional buttermilk.
