Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 medium apples (like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground cardamom (optional)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt or sour cream
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar (for topping)
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round or square baking pan and line it with parchment paper.
  2. Prepare the apples by peeling, coring, and slicing them thinly.
  3. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and cardamom.
  4. In another bowl, mix the melted butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, and yogurt until smooth.
  5. Gradually combine the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined.
  6. Spread half of the batter in the prepared pan and layer with half of the apple slices. Top with remaining batter and arrange the rest of the apples on top.
  7. Mix sugar and cinnamon for the topping and sprinkle over the apples.
  8. Bake for about 40–45 minutes until golden brown; a toothpick inserted should come out clean.
  9. Let cool for 10–15 minutes before serving.
